Hypnotherapy for Fertility
In an ideal world trying for a baby is the start of an exciting journey of hope and anticipation. Unfortunately, it’s not like that for everyone. I know from personal experience just how disappointing, all-consuming and stressful trying for a baby can become. For me there was a happy ending… eventually. I didn’t know about hypnotherapy for fertility at the time but I wish I had!
How can hypnotherapy for fertility help?
Hypnotherapy for fertility can’t guarantee you’ll get pregnant – sadly, nothing can do that. However, hypnotherapy for fertility aims to give you the best chance of conceiving by helping you to:
- reduce any anxious thoughts you may be having
- reduce your stress levels
- increase your confidence
- increase your feelings of calmness and relaxation
- identify and resolve any issues that may be preventing you from getting pregnant (subconscious and conscious)
- feel supported throughout the process
If you’re experiencing unexplained infertility and/or going through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, hypnotherapy may be able to help.

Stress and infertility
If there are no medical reasons to stop you from conceiving, it’s likely that psychological factors are getting in the way. There’s growing evidence that suggests stress may be a contributory factor to lack of conception. Stress can upset the natural balance of hormones necessary for menstruation, ovulation, fertilisation, and even successful implantation of the egg.
Research at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that stress was associated with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA). This is a condition where menstruation and ovulation stops without a known cause. The results of this research show just how sensitive the body can be to stress.
Another clinical study at University of Vienna Medical School showed that 9 out of 12 women with FHA resumed menstruation following hypnosis. The women also all showed improvement in their general well-being and self-confidence. Therefore, it seems that if we reduce stress and increase wellbeing, the body will return to its healthy reproductive state.
Further research, published in the Handbook of Behavioural Medicine, concluded that hypnosis was therapeutically effectively in treating stress-induced infertility. It found that hypnosis can help to reset the natural balance of hormone levels necessary to provide the best chance of conceiving.
How does hypnotherapy for fertility help with IVF?
Hypnotherapy doesn’t claim to cure medical problems but it has shown promising results when used in conjunction with IVF.
If you’re going through IVF it’s likely you’re experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. This can be very stressful and can lead to anxiety or depression over time. The good news is that by reducing your stress you may be able to increase your chances of getting pregnant. Hypnotherapy sessions will aim to help you reduce stress and increase your overall wellbeing to give you the best chance of conceiving.
Study finds that reducing stress improves IVF success rates
A study, led by Alice Domar, Ph.D, OB/GYN, reported that “infertile” women who use mind/body techniques, such as hypnosis, have an increased pregnancy rate in the second cycle of IVF. They achieved a 52% conception rate as compared to just 20% using IVF alone. Women who had scored for depression at the outset of the study showed improvement of their symptoms and also showed the most benefit from the intervention at 67%.
“The study supports the theory that psychological distress may be an important detriment to IVF outcome. We worked with a small group, about a 100 women total, so we’ll need to continue with a larger group of patients to see if the results bear out,” said Domar. “But there is a strong indication that stress levels and IVF outcomes are linked and that intervening with mind/body therapies can help.”

Study suggests hypnosis can double IVF success
A study, conducted by Professor Eliahu Levitas at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, demonstrated how hypnosis can improve fertility and effectively double the success of IVF treatments. 28% of the women hypnotised for the IVF treatment became pregnant compared to 14% of the women in the control group. The women received hypnosis during the most stressful part of IVF treatment – the transferring of embryos into the uterus. According to Levitas, stress can cause complications during the transfer that can put the procedure at risk. He concluded:
“Performing embryo transfer under hypnosis may significantly contribute to an increased clinical pregnancy rate.”
